Dubai Building Index: An Integrated Approach to Improving Building Lifecycle Performance

The recent Consultant Contractor Conference, held in September, in Dubai saw a spirited discussion amongst the good and great of Dubai’s construction sector about the varied approaches in place today to improve building performance. Given the fact that shelter has moved from being a fundamental requirement to an expansive sector in itself, comprising of all the knick-knacks required for an improved lifestyle, it is imperative that high building performance be made a priority. However, despite the fact that high building performance is the need of the hour and is talked about a lot, it still feels like a castle in the air. This shortcoming inspired the innovative concept of the ‘Dubai Building Index’, an integrated approach to increasing building performance for its entire lifecycle. Construction sector should get governed based on the geographical and climatic conditions with a concept of building index which will be an actual representation of the quality of building & actual energy consumption of the same. Let’s assume a concept of ‘Dubai Building Index’, for Dubai. We dig into the bones of this concept of Dubai Building Index here, to understand how it can be useful and helpful to all stakeholders of construction sector. The 6 Challenges to Making Solar Energy Affordable

Solar energy seems like the perfect solution to all of mankind’s energy issues. The concept of green energy is hardly new, it has been around for decades now. Yet, despite continuous endeavours, solar energy has not really permeated the day-to-day life of the common man. Source: http://news.energysage.com/understanding-the-cost-of-a-solar-panel-system/ A recent survey showed that the contribution of solar energy in the total energy generated across the globe was just 2%, in 2016. Admittedly, there has been a rapid increase in the global solar generation capacity over the past 10 years, still, it is nowhere close to being easily available for the masses. This leads us to the question, what exactly is the snag here? We have enough and more sunlight, global climate change already has us on our toes, yet, sporadic efforts aside, there has not been significant constructive advancement towards utilising solar energy to its maximum potential. The answer to this is that there are two major drawbacks to using solar energy which reduce its extent of application drastically; The efficiency of solar panels is moderate at best The cost of solar energy is still at a premium It is evident that the high cost of generating and storing solar energy and the maintenance involved is the primary reason for limited investment in solar energy. Even increasing the efficiency of solar … Continue reading The 6 Challenges to Making Solar Energy Affordable
