  • What are the main criteria for designing MEP?

Types of projects and client requirements are the two key criteria for designing MEP services. For example, the requirements of a hotel differ from those of a school. Similarly, for residential projects, developers target different end customers; luxury versus affordability makes a significant difference in MEP design.

  • Is Green Building Costly?

Cost needs to be evaluated in three parts: capital (initial/construction) cost, operational cost, and maintenance cost. Historical data indicates that only 35% of the total cost is the initial cost for the project, while 65% is associated with operations and maintenance (O&M). If only the initial cost is considered, it may seem somewhat high; however, when considering the overall life cycle, green buildings are certainly cost-effective.

  • What is the difference between the sound synonyms green development and sustainable development?

A green building considers the impact of the structure throughout its lifecycle on both the environment and its occupants. However, it does not account for the broader impact on the economy or energy. Sustainable development represents a balance between energy, environment, and economy.

  • Why are VRF Systems getting more acceptance in upcoming projects?

The VRF system offers a balance between DX systems and chillers. DX systems cannot take advantage of diversity, as they are dedicated to specific spaces. While systems optimized for buildings with diversity have their benefits, they come with a higher initial cost. The VRF system provides an ideal compromise between both options.

  • What is the pay back time for energy efficient buildings vs normal buildings?

Equation to evaluate the payback period is: Payback Period= capital cost + (operation cost +maintenance cost)/number of years. In energy efficient buildings capital cost is on higher side as compared to ordinary buildings. By & large, 5 years is considered as a good payable period for decently designed energy efficient buildings.

  • What is the difference between Green certified building and WELL certified building?

For green certification the focus is on the environment. Hence the parameters to evaluate performance or compliance to green buildings are: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy efficiency, Indoor environmental quality, material and resources. While for WELL certified buildings focus is on the well being of the occupants. The evaluation parameters for the WELL certified buildings are thermal comfort, nourishment, sound, community mind etc.

  • What is the difference between energy conservation and energy efficiency?

Prevention of unwanted consumption of energy is energy conservation. Reducing consumption of energy for the required performance is energy efficiency. For example, passive measures such as providing double door with air lock lobby is part of energy conservation while providing five star equipment is part of energy efficiency.

  • Is it important to carry out modeling of building?

Modeling works out on various aspects j.e. geometric, performance, coordination etc. Any challenges at site during execution are time, resource consuming having heavy impact with cost. All such challenges can be analyzed and addressed using modeling techniques hence it is highly recommended to carry out modeling of building.
