Gas Distribution
The provision of gas in buildings is one of the most fundamental services facilitated by MEP engineering. As an essential service for all the users/operators of the building, it is easy to overlook its design; but the convenience as well as safety of this utility must be conscious aspects.
Team Consistent believes in rigorous application of fire safety codes towards gas distribution design, such as the NFPA 58, as well as local safety regulations such as the DCD in Dubai and the NBC in India. We ensure that all components of our design are fire rated as well as explosion-proof.
The major application of Gas Distribution Systems is, of course, in the Hospitality and Industrial Sectors. Liquid Gas equipment is one of the options that can reduce electrical energy consumption. This is also a cheaper option for the building operator; however, there is a potential fire hazard due to the flammable gas. Given this, it is necessary to have a proper design and application of codes.
In developed countries with a network grid for supply, coordinating with the infrastructure is key to a proper design. Optimal sizing of the tank is important: under-designing will lead to resource shortage while over-designing will lead to wastage and risk.
For safety purposes, it is also important to segregate properly between electrical and gas distribution, requiring coordination throughout the infrastructure connection to the end user. Additionally, gas lines must be designed to stay clear of established escape routes.
Safety and ease of usage are the two parameters that inform Team Consistent’s gas distribution designs. For instance, most of our designs utilize a ‘pipe-in-pipe’ system where the inner pipe carries the gas while the outer pipe provides protection to occupants. In case of leakage, the detector is present in the outer pipe itself, and alerts the maintenance to a potential safety risk. For convenience, gas flow regulators are provided at 2 levels: a high-to-medium pressure regulator at the infrastructure connect, and a medium-to-low pressure regulator at operational level.
For instance, one of the 4-star hotels in Palm Jumeirah had challenges of power availability. The location of the plot on the crescent made it impossible to upgrade the power network. Team Consistent had a series of discussions with developer and operator, and converted all major equipment from electric to gas-operated. The entire hotel was handled with gas-fired hot water and steam boilers. Find more details on the Project here!
